Final front cover and digi pak

I used the same techniques to edit this photo also, as the lighting was the same because I took the photo during the same time as the poster one. The editing was then easy to do because I knew what edits to use. I like the central aspects of this cover; it is simple, easy to read and eyecatching. I think the positioning of the mask works well as the left ear lies next to the text, which mixes the media of text and image together slightly. Darkening the edges closes the image in, focussing it on the main aspects of the cover. I think this works well because it is different and looks like a spotlight. The text is slightly different to the poster due to specific preferences that my group chose. Either way I think it works well, and this differentiation works effectively.

This is the final digi pak front way round, to make it easier to read the lyrics.
I soon realised this when I made a small paper template of this digi pak to make sure the dimensions were correct.

Final poster tests

As we could not use the photos of Jo, I have created the same style layout but with a new image. I took new photos of the rabbit mask, and have edited the layouts accordingly. I like these layouts and think they work well as advertisements. They contain the information that they need; Poppy and the Jezebels are an unsigned band so there is no need for labels etc to be named. As this a project and there is no single actually being published no stores are named for copyright reasons.
I have included fan pages and music bases because posters often include advertisement techniques like these. These are for the fans benefit of listening to music, and also beneficial to the marketers.

Brighter colours to match the digi pak version. I desaturated the image slightly to do this, altering the curves and levels to do so. I think this would work well as a final.

This is my favourite cover test; I think it could work very well as final. The colours are great; i desaturated some of the green so it wasn't too vibrant. There is a wonderland feel to it and I think it works great.

This was initially going to be the final digi pak layout; we all created a certain part of it. I created the front cover, and Kiera designed the rest of it.
As a group we decided some more editing could be added to maximise its potential. I have edited a grass image for Kiera so it is alike to my front cover so they can match better, and Kiera will create the rest of the digi pak from there.

Final digi pak layout

These are some rough layouts on our final layouts that we plan to use for our digi pak. Felix Texting is most likely going to be the font used as it is one that we as a group all agree on.

Original photos for anxillary products.

I took these photos for the digi pak and poster. I decided to take inspiration from The Auteur's album cover (which is seen earlier on in my blog). I showed my group this idea and they agreed.
I then gained a rabbit mask off a friend of mine, and when we had decided it was a good idea, I took the mask into my garden and took photos of it for our cover.
There are also photos of Jo (our main character), but these were taken from another subjects work so I understand we cannot use these as final products.

This is my favourite photo of Jo. It is a centred image, and I think this works best. Jo also looks very nice in this photo, and an eyecatching good looking model is what a poster needs. The midshot allows her face to be the main aspect of the image, without being too close as a close up.

My groups tests

I thought I would compare the rest of my groups tests with my own.

Emilys - I really like the colours that Emily used in these posters; they are my favourites out of her tests. She altered the colour balance it seems to gain this purple like colour to the images. Some of the typography is a little uneasy to read, such as the pink writing against the dark pink/purple background. The font of writing works quite well as it is quite vintage looking which works well.

Annas - I like these tests as they are very creative, though I feel that some different editing skills could have been more effective. For example the poster of Jo is over exposed and it the colours do not match the background. The typography does not matches the style of the poster and 'UFO' actually blends too much into the background, along with the myspace. I think these are good tests overall for development.

Annas - These are some more of Annas ideas that she tested. I think the creativity again is good as she has put some thought into what she wanted to do. A small image of the cd cover (this one was actually just a test) is placed in the corner, which demonstrates a media convention in the music advertisement business.

album cover test ideas.

This is my favourite out of the tests that I tried. I think there needs to be some added detail on it, maybe the typography. Something that isn't so bold and simple may look good as everything about the cover could appear boring. On the other hand this simplicity does make it stand out nice and easily.

This was just one with some added detailed to give a sense of originality to the band. The lighting bolts were to indicate some detail to the piece.
I used a fish eye filter on the typography here to try mishape the image slightly. I think it works well but not for this genre of music or purpose.

Again this is the fish eye filter but a different direction. I dont like the central aspect of the cover the sides appear to be bare.

My initial inspiration for the album cover is from independant signed band The Auteur.

This was an idea i thought i would try, in black and white, to test the simplicities and colours that could work well. I like the effect with the rabbit mask, but the rest of the cover now appears to be boring. If the rabbit was of a larger size this may increase the graphological aspects.

I like the rich colours in this one; it is pretty simple again and I like the layout.

This was some experimentation I tried with colour. I thought a black and white background and text could work, and in some cases it can but not for this particular purpose. I changed the rabbit to pink to add some colour and to also make the cover appear more girly.

This was the same again but with a manipulated ablue rabbit. I added the song title because there was a large space missing and sometimes it is placed on the single of a cover. I think the rabbit looks slightly evil with this editing so I shall not try it again.

Tested ideas with Jo and Rabbit

I have created some tests for the poster and digi pak. I took an idea from one of the adverts i saw in Rocksound magazine for LostProphets, and digitall manipulated my own personal idea for it.
I used photographs of Jo (our main character) as I thought this would work well in promoting the band. These photos were studio based. They were initially taken for another subject so I shall not be using these as finals. I understand that I cannot do this. However these were the only photographs I had of Jo so I thought I would do some tests. I think they work well but I also think not using a model can work well.

This was my 'final' result from the tests i produced. I like the layout of this one and the editing I did on it. I like how the colours are quite simple and neutral.

I like the layout on this one also as it is off central. It gives the viewer more to look at and your eyes follow the page. It is quite simple again though I feel that there is too much space left in the advert.

I decided to create a digi pak front cover based on the same idea as the posters I created. I think it works well, but on the other hand my group and I have already decided to use the rabbit mask. Also, with difficulty to get into the college studio it would probably be best to not get too involved in getting a photograph of Jo. Location work could be effective but I think the rabbit mask works well too so we will stick with that idea.

I like the central aspect of this cover. I used green and white text to correspond with the rest of the cover, and I think this has worked very well. The green does not blend too much into the background, and as it has been manipulated a lot through photoshop this works well. I altered the saturation to allow the grass to be less green, and I burnt the edges to make the cover more centralised.

I did the same editing skills on this cover again, but i used the rabbit mask photo from the earlier tests I did. This time I cut around the rabbit and moved it accross the image. I then used the clone stamp tool to repatch the grass. I altered the opacity on the song title so it wasn't all so bold. Bold is good but I like the subtlety of this.

Going back to my earlier tests, I think this works well. I created a simple cover with simple text and a simple layout. I think it looks good but also a little boring.

This was a poster i created when i though of adding the digi pak cover to the poster. Adverts do this a lot of the time so I thought I would try this idea myself. I think it works well in terms of promotion, though I do not personally like the layout and colours of this poster. It is too simple and I prefer the poster that was discussed before.

Advert poster layout ideas

Personally, I think this layout is a little messy and may not work. The concept of it is fine but I think it would be more beneficial to have the band name on the top of the poster.

I like this layout the best out of the five designs. It is simple and as your eyes follow from top to bottom, I think the most important aspects get seen in the correct order. The band name and release date are first, then the image, then extra information.

I like this idea also; I have flipped the band name and image. I think it could work well but I still prefer the second design more.

When designing this layout I was thinking along the lines of a spacious poster, with limited information and one simple image. I think this could work well and I shall probably test this idea.

This layout is incredibly simple and even though it is similar to the second design, it lacks the information such as the song title and date information. Posters do not always hold this information but I personally think that they should.

These are some designs I did a while back which I thought I would upload for development of ideas. Some share features which the ideas above.
Personally, I like the bottom left corner idea. I can imagine this being a location based photograph. I do like the others as i have thought about what ideas i think could work, not just any random ones.
I think a photograph of Jo, maybe holding the mask could work quite well. I heard this idea from a member of my group and i think we could develop this well.

This idea is also one of my favourites. A location or studio shot could work of Jo. I think having the name on the back and the artist photograph on the front works well.

Digipak measurements

This is a template for the measurements that we would use for our own digipak layout. I can use this to create my digipak effectively.

digi pak whole layout/poster layout

CD tray layouts. As a group we have decided to use the first CD tray layout. Having the grass on the background would work better because it corresponds with the rest of the digi pak better than the second layout.

Back cover layouts. We have decided to use one of the bottom two. Having the band name on the back of a case does not usually happen because it is stated on the front cover, so the right hand side one would fit better. On the other hand it is not impossible so could be used if it looks more effective.

Inside cover layouts. We have decided to use the second layout (top right) as it is simple yet effective. As this is only for the one song, we thought it would be effective to have the lyrics inside the case. Simply naming the song and having the lyrics will make use of this cover well.

Poster advert layouts. We have decided to use a mixture of some of the layouts. The second (top middle) , third (top right) and fifth (bottom right) are my particular favourites.

A member of my group (Kiera) designed these layouts to give us some indication on how to produce our anxillary products.
We have come to some decisions about which ones to pick and use for these products.
It is best to have lots of ideas so they can be narrowed down to personal preference.

Possible fonts

I have looked into some font style for our digi pak/album cover/poster. I think a simple bold font would be best because it is easy to read and is not too complicated. I think Font 1,2, 9 and 10 could all be possinle fonts for the artist name. For smaller information the other could be used to differentiate. I shall show my group and see what fonts they also came up with to decide which one or two to use.

Album cover layouts

I created some album cover layouts to assert me in my testing of album covers. I will test some of these ideas and evaluate their effectiveness.
